Milk thistle is one of the most scientifically studied and understood herbs in use today.
Most of its effectiveness is attributed to three liver protecting compounds collectively known as silymarin, which consist of 6% of the seeds which are used in the manufacture of the tincture.
The herb fortifies the liver so much so that it has the power to regenerate liver cells.
So potent are these effects, Milk Thistle is sometimes given to patients in hospital with mushroom poisoning to ensure their livers are protected.

The herb is prescribed by a lot of herbalists to those with a high alcohol intake who may or may not have liver damage.
The herb also detoxifies or neutralises many drugs (liver congesting & damaging), chemical pollutants and alcohol.
A large future use of Milk Thistle will be to detoxify the liver after using strong medications like chemotherapy.

An amino acid like compound called glutathione that enhances the detoxifying process of the liver is protected by the herb.
Milk thistle increases levels of glutathione by around 35%. The herb has more antioxidant power than vitamin C and E to soak up free radicals.
As the health giving compounds of the herb are not water soluble it is best to use a tincture. Use 5 drops of tincture per stone in weight as a rule of thumb in some water.
